After teaching science for 27 years, it is truly my pleasure to be part of the DEHS Physical Education Department. I earned my bachelor of science degree with an emphasis in health and physical education from Cameron University in Lawton, OK. The following year, I earned my master of education degree from Southwestern OK State University in Weatherford, OK. While I was at Southwestern, I was also the Head Women's Volleyball Coach. During my years as an educator I have coached, at some level, the following sports: basketball, gymnastics, softball, swimming, track & field, and volleyball. During these same years, I played volleyball, at the collegiate level as well as for the United States Paralympic Volleyball Team where Team USA won the bronze medal at the Paralympic Games held in Athens, Greece in 2004.

I believe that health and physical education, properly taught, teaches students the values that are embedded in life: honesty, open-mindedness, critical thinking, and the capacity to withhold judgment in the absence of evidence. In teaching the curriculum, I am also able to implement the teaching of values and character. The rules of our classroom, and those of our school, affect character by establishing what is permitted, encouraged, or forbidden. I directly affect character by the example I set in dealing with students and colleagues. The social climate of our class sends clear messages to my students about the kinds of values that are prized by their classmates and other adults. Values like responsibility, fairness, independence, kindness, courtesy, diligence, persistence, and self-discipline are not taught by role-playing games; they are taught by the life that is actually lived, and the activities that are actually experienced, in our classroom. I hope that my students are able to take these values and implement them into their own lives, as they become viable members of society.
