Software Info and download/installation links and instructions for family-owned laptops
Basic information regarding Google and Office365/Teams accounts, along with additional free software that they can install on their family purchased laptops and then use for their projects at school (and personal projects as well) can be found on this document: BYOD Software Links and installers. Note that all students in 6th grade through 12th grade have been assigned Google Accounts as well as Office 365 accounts. The account information is usually provided at the start of the school year to the 6th graders (and to students new to the district).

Part 2: The options for families (Time frame: July - early August)
The steps for making your decision for your choice of the 6 BYOD options should be simple and very similar to what we have done the last couple of years. There will be no special websites, and no special codes. Instead, there will be a simple form that will be made available on this webpage: see below the options list (near the bottom of this web page in the "Make Your Selection" area) for the link to the online BYOD selection form. The form won't be active until sometime around the latter half of July Each family will make their selection for students using that form of one of the 6 BYOD program options, including the option of requesting a school-owned laptop. Bryan Berg will receive that information and will coordinate your choice: ordering of the laptop you selected; confirm with you that you will be using a laptop you already own (but still meet required specs); confirm you are ordering a laptop outside of those that qualify for the discounts (but still meet required specs); or coordinate a school-owned laptop for your son or daughter to use at school. Any laptops ordered through the school from CDW-G or MnCFS (which must be done on your behalf by the school for the school to provide the $100 discount) will be delivered to the school where they can be paid for and picked up (still in their boxes, if applicable). School-owned laptops will be available for pickup a few days before the start of the school year. |
The 6 options you will have on the D-E BYOD Online Decision Form will be as follows (you will be choosing one of the options for each student you have that's eligible for the BYOD program this year): |
Option 1: You wish to purchase a new laptop from the three that CDW-G is offering with guaranteed pricing (these will have a $100 discount as long as the purchase is made through the school)
Option 2: You wish to purchase one of the the three refurbished laptop options from MnCFS (also includes $100 discount as long as the purchase is made through the school)
The Minnesota Computers for Schools laptop options are shown on this document: 2022-2023 Laptop purchase options using the $100 Voucher - this document also has information regarding the warranty for these MnCFS laptops, as well as a link to the set-up process for a new Windows laptop. It also has information to be aware of for Windows 11 compatibility, especially for those of you with students entering 6th grade this year!
If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, be sure to review the BYOD Software Links and installers document
Option 3: You wish purchase a new laptop from any laptop (that meets school requirements) that CDW-G is offering but without guaranteed pricing (these will have a $100 discount as long as the purchase is made through the school)
While there are too many options from CDW-G to list, as a reference, please be sure to look at the bottom of the 2022-2023 Laptop purchase options using the $100 Voucher - because information regarding the warranty for the CDW-G Lenovo and HP laptops, as well as a link to the set-up process for a new Windows laptop is included. Do note that a couple of laptop models that were popular last year weren't part of the "price guarantee" options from CDW-G for this year, but they are still available from CDW-G. Do note that quantities may be limited, and prices can change. Some basic info is on the 2022-2023 Laptop purchase options using the $100 Voucher document under the CDW-G area!
Be sure your laptop choice meets the minimum specs (check with Bryan by emailing him at ), and is a Windows or Macintosh laptop running the latest operating system (Windows 10/11, or Mac OS 10.15 ("Catalina") or newer). Minimum specs are on slide 24 of this online slideshow: online Google Slideshow.
If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, be sure to review the BYOD Software Links and installers document
Option 4: You decided to use a laptop that you already own.
Please make sure your laptop meets the minimum specs (check with Bryan by emailing him at ), and is a Windows or Macintosh laptop running the latest operating system (Windows 11 or Windows 10 with Windows 11 compatibility, or Mac OS 10.15 ("Catalina") or newer). Minimum specs are on slide 24 of this online slideshow: online Google Slideshow. A partial list of older laptops that are compatible with Windows 11: Windows 11 Compatible Laptops & Desktop PCs (from techviral.net)
If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, be sure to review the BYOD Software Links and installers document
Option 5: You decided to purchase a computer other than those available in Options 1-3 (no discount is provided for this option).
Please make sure your purchase meets the minimum specs (check with Bryan by emailing him at ), and is a Windows or Macintosh laptop running the latest operating system (Windows 11 or Windows 10 with Windows 11 compatibility, or Mac OS 10.15 ("Catalina") or newer). Minimum specs are on slide 24 of this online slideshow: online Google Slideshow. If the laptop purchased will be brand new, there shouldn't be any issues with Windows 11 compatibility, but if you found a refurbished laptop to purchase outside of the D-E program options, be sure to check on this compatibility list: Windows 11 Compatible Laptops & Desktop PCs (techviral.net), and email Bryan ( ) with any questions.
If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, be sure to review the BYOD Software Links and installers document

Option 6: You decide to use a school-owned laptop
A laptop will be set-up by the school for your student to use for the school year. Note that even with this option, the students and their families are responsible for damages/repairs.
* For more about this option, please look through and become familiar with the 1:1 laptop handbook: One to One Laptop Handbook, including the Protection Plan information which begins on Page 7 of the handbook.
* If you decide on this option, you will need to print out and complete the Protection Plan Form with your choice about using the school's school-owned laptop protection plan. If you choose to use the protection plan, you will also need to submit the $25 for the annual premium for the plan to take effect. The completed Protection Plan form MUST be turned in before we can release a school-owned laptop to the student.
*You will also need to print out and complete the "One to One Computer Pledge Form". The completed Pledge Form also MUST be turned in before we can release a school-owned laptop to the student
* Links to the above documents that will need to be filled out will also be on the selection form once it is made available below in the Part 3: Make Your Selection area.
If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, you will not have to worry about software installation. School-owned laptops will come with software already installed on them.
