Welcome to Elementary Music!

My name is Katie Kabes and I am the K-5 vocal music teacher.  I have been teaching music since 1994…sounds like a long time, but feels like just yesterday.  I taught for 15 years in Wadena, MN and since I came here in 2009, I am happy to call Dover-Eyota my school home.  I love teaching music because I get to interact with all the students in a school.  The reason I teach music is because I truly believe that it is something that all kids can participate and do well in.  I do not expect all students to become performers, but I do expect all my students to do their best.  As a grade, we perform a concert once a year, but that is not the main goal of my music students.  By learning music, my students are able to become well-rounded, responsible, confident, compassionate and cooperative learners.  We learn about rhythms, tuneful singing, musical vocabulary such as dynamics and tempo as well as composers.  4th and 5th graders spend time learning to count rhythms and read the treble clef in preparation for playing recorders and 5th grade band.  Please feel free to contact me or join us for a music class to see more of the hands on activities that we do to aid us in becoming the best musicians and students we can be.
