Reading:

Reading is the key to all other subjects.  It develops vocabulary, writing skills, and allows people to independently solve problems through research.  Please encourage your child to read everyday for 20 to 30 minutes.

In our class we will have a reading project each quarter.  Students will need to read a book in order to complete these projects. In addition we will read a chapter book as a class in each quarter.  There will be guiding questions in the form of a packet for each of these books.  Additionally there will be a test at the end of each to assess comprehension of the story.   Along with these things, our class will read shorter stories in order to practice specific skills like, cause and effect, summarizing, sequencing, plot, character, setting, main idea, authors purpose and drawing conclusions.  These skills will be assessed throughout the year, generally every 2 weeks.
